All Covid restrictions to be lifted from April 1

India is witnessing a gradual decrease in the Covid 19 cases. In view of the same, the home ministry has decided to put an end to all the COVID-19 containment measures from March 31, 2022. However, maintaining social distance, hand hygiene, and wearing face masks are still to be continued.

The Central Government had imposed the Covid guidelines on March 24, 2020, for the first time under the Disaster Management Act (DM Act) 2005.

In a discussion with the chief secretaries of all states, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said that from the last 2 years, facilities have been developed for different aspects of management of the pandemic such as diagnostics, surveillance, contact tracing, treatment, vaccination, hospital infrastructure. With this, the general public is also aware of Covid appropriate behavior.

“It is also worth mentioning that with the combined efforts, a total of 181.56 crore vaccine doses have been administered,” said Ajay Bhalla. “After taking into consideration the overall improvement in the situation and preparedness of the Government to deal with the pandemic, National Disaster Management Authority has decided that there may not be any further need to invoke the provisions of the DM Act for COVID containment measures,” he further said.

Further officials added that after the expiry of the existing order on March 31, the Ministry of Home Affairs will not issue any new order again. However, the Home Secretary said that everyone still needs to be aware and watchful of their activities and situation. As advised by the Ministry of Health, actions will be taken at the local level whenever there is a sudden increase in the number of cases.

“I would, therefore, advise all the States and UTs to consider appropriately discontinuing the issue of orders and guidelines under the DM Act, 2005 for COVID containment measures,” said Ajay Bhalla.
